Education Reform In Our Community
What does education reform look like? This is what CUEE plans to define in coming months with the help of educators, administrators, parents, and concerned citizens.
Several years ago, Chattanooga and Hamilton County Tennessee began reforming their schools with great success.
CUEE has chosen to base our plan of reform for Valdosta and Lowndes County schools on this model.
Some priorities to be addressed in the plan are:
1. Curriculum and instruction
2. Recruitment, retention, and assessment of teachers and principals
3. Parent involvement
4. Allocation of resources
CUEE acknowledges that our local schools are doing their best to educate our children. But there is always room for improvement. The 2010 graduation rate for Lowndes High School was 83.4% and at Valdosta High School 72.5%. Neither school achieved AYP (Average Yearly Progress) according to the Georgia Department of Education. With new federal regulations forthcoming for schools, now is the time to implement positive changes.
To compete on a global level, all students need the opportunity to receive a well-rounded education that challenges and encourages them to be their best. Our hope is that adopting a plan for education reform created by people in Valdosta and Lowndes County will give the community a sense of ownership when it comes to educating our children.
After all, it is our responsibility to ensure every step is taken to give our kids an education that ensures a bright future for them, our community, and our world.
